Discovering New Territory
Saturday, June 27     12:30-4:00pm

Unlock a hidden part of your practice! There is something that governs every asana, every movement and every breath but few of us know about it. This incredible workshop of discovery and movement is for anybody- yoga practitioner or otherwise- who struggles with opening their body or is restricted in their movement. In this workshop we will explore an oft-overlooked system called the fascial system. We will explore this vital system with a visual presentation, group discussion and then through an experiential movement class in order to combine all of our senses to understand our bodies at a deeper level.

Eric Webb and Erin Bobo have co-created this special class as an expression of their desire to give everyone an opportunity to learn about fascia from an intellectual perspective as well as visceral, experiential perspective. Both are Advanced Myofascial Release practitioners who, with a combined 25 years of experience, assist clients with chronic pain conditions. Erin is a certified Nia instructor and brings a beautifully unique perspective to these teachings by leading the group through explorational movement in a special Nia routine based on X-ray anatomy.

Participants will:
-Learn how to see, feel and experience their body in a new light
-Learn how to identify patterns of restriction caused by tightness in the fascial system.
-Ways to surpass plateaus in your practice
-Why we and others struggle with certain asanas, have discomfort or have no energy.
-Use our left brains to explore the functionality of the fascial system
-Use our right brain and body to integrate the learning experience!

Exploring the Fascial System for Yoga Instructors
Date: TBA

This workshop is designed specifically for yoga instructors and was recently premiered at the Living Yoga Teacher Training program during the 2008 Texas Yoga Retreat. Strategies for overcoming restrictions that limit flexibility and strength will also be discussed. Be among the first instructors in the country to receive the exclusive information in this workshop which is not offered at any other training program. This 3-hour workshop is an amazing opportunity to expand the professional instructor's breadth of knowledge and areas of expertise. Participants will:

MFR Basics

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a new weapon in the armamentarium of a select number of skilled therapists, assisting their clients with chronic pain, postural imbalances and musculoskeletal problems.

Gravity, daily activities and non-awareness influence our body every second of the day. We are constantly being pulled forward in space and the muscles of the back and neck are over-worked trying to keep us upright.

When we are able to attain flexibility and thereby good posture, it allows efficient use of musculature (resulting in increased energy levels), proper function of internal organs, increased oxygenation of tissues (by allowing the diaphragm and lungs to work better) and overall improved health.

Please read the articles below for a brief explanation about what Myofascial Release is and what it can do for you.

MFR Introduction

The Myofascial Release Approach is an intensive "hands-on" technique for the whole body developed by John F. Barnes. MFR focuses on the fascia of the body -- the three-dimensional connective tissue web which surrounds EVERY structure of the body, including:

         o bone
         o muscle
         o nerve
         o blood vessel
         o organ

Fascia is present all the way down to the cellular level. When an individual experiences physical trauma, inflammatory processes or scarring, the fascia can become restricted and begin to pull throughout the body causing pain, altered posture, excessive joint compression, decreased range of motion, decreased muscle efficiency and many symptoms all of us struggle with daily.

When the cause of these symptoms, myofascial restriction, is left untreated, these symptoms often progress to the point of some type of chronic pain syndrome. In some clients, blood vessels and nerve roots can become caught which creates entrapment syndromes and ischemic-like conditions. The fascia can produce enormous tensile strength of up to 2000 lbs. per square inch on pain sensitive structures.

Our approach is successful because we treat a system in the body that no one else treats, the fascial system. Our typical client has had problems for many years, has seen numerous health care professionals and has often exhausted medical benefits and financial resources by the time they make it to our treatment center. Once the fascial system is addressed, these same clients begin to make progress and in a matter of weeks, with intensive Myofascial Release treatment, are on their way to a pain-free, active lifestyle again.

The goal is to work with you to provide the most cost-effective intervention to address your long- term, chronic pain problem. Please do not hesitate to call 512.964.8963 with any questions or concerns. It is always a pleasure to share knowledge and the experience of Myofascial Release.

What is MFR?

One of the primary goals of a massage therapist is to facilitate change in the body's tissue and promote pain-free, quality movement. The primary modality to achieve this goal is Myofascial Release, a relatively new addition to the armamentarium of massage therapists.

Myofascial Release, as taught by John Barnes, P.T., is an extremely mild and gentle form of stretching that has a profound effect upon the tissues of the body, especially the fascial system.

Fascia is a tough connective tissue which spreads throughout the body in a three dimensional web from head to foot without interruption. The fascia surrounds every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, and organ of the body, all the way down to the cellular level.

Therefore, malfunction of the fascial system due to trauma, posture, or inflammation can create a binding down of the fascia, resulting in abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, bones, or organs. This can create pain or malfunction throughout the body, sometimes with bizarre side effects and seemingly unrelated symptoms throughout the body.

Myofascial Release can release the pressures created by the fascial system and return each individual to her or his full, pain-free capacity.
